Population size and breeding colonies of Greater Flamingo, Phoenicopterus roseus, in Salt Lake of Turkey

The greater flamingo, which has a wide distribution in the global sense, has important breeding colonies in Türkiye, the most important of which is in Lake Tuz. The breeding grounds in Lake Tuz, which were first recorded in 1969, still exist, and regular and irregular brood counts have been made for the last 20 years. In recent years, detailed counting results have been obtained by using aerial imaging and photo counting methods by plane supported by the relevant ministry. In this study, some environmental threats on flamingos, irregular adult numbers and juvenile counts made by aerial imaging for the years 2017-2018 and 2019 were emphasized. According to the results, the number of flamingo offspring, which has decreased in recent years, has increased to over ten thousands in 2017 and 2018, and over twenty thousand individuals in 2019. It has been observed that after hatching, the chicks move to the area where Konya Canal pours into Salt Lake and they carry out their feeding activities in these regions. Puppies have also been observed to be perished by stray dogs, poachers and carnivores. Small changes in the Tuz Gölü water regime are thought to be proportional to the change in the number of juveniles observed in recent years. A stable lake system will bring about a stable breeding colony.

TUZ GÖLÜ'NDEKİ FLAMİNGO, PHOENICOPTERUS ROSEUS'UN POPÜLASYON BÜYÜKLÜĞÜ VE ÜREME KOLONİLERİ

Öz

Küresel anlamda geniş bir yayılış alanına sahip flamingonun en önemlisi Tuz Gölü’nde olmak üzere Türkiye’de önemli üreme kolonileri bulunmaktadır. İlk kez 1969’da kaydedilen Tuz Gölü’ndeki üreme alanları halen en önemli flamingo üreme alanlarındandır ve son 20 yıldır düzenli ve düzensiz yavru sayımları yapılmaktadır. Son yıllarda ilgili bakanlık destekli uçakla havadan görüntüleme ve fotoğrafla sayım metotları kullanılarak ayrıntılı sayım sonuçları elde edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada da 2017-2018 ve 2019 yıllarına ait havadan görüntüleme ile yapılan yavru sayımları, düzensiz ergin birey sayıları ve flamingolar üzerine bazı çevresel tehditler üzerinde durulmuştur. Sonuçlara göre son yıllarda düşüşe geçen flamingo yavru sayıları, 2017 ve 2018 yıllarında on bin üzerine, 2019 yılında yirmi bin birey üzerine çıkmıştır. Kuluçkadan çıkan civcivlerin palazlandıktan sonra Konya Kanalı’nın Tuz Gölü’ne döküldüğü alana hareket ettikleri ve beslenme faaliyetlerini bu bölgelerde gerçekleştirdikleri görülmüştür. Yavruların başıboş köpekler, yasadışı avcılar ve etoburlar tarafından telef edildikleri de gözlemlenmiştir. Tuz Gölü’nün su rejimindeki küçük değişikliklerin son yıllarda gözlenen yavru birey sayılarındaki değişimle orantılı olduğu düşünülmektedir. Kararlı bir göl sistemi kararlı bir üreme kolonisini beraberinde getirecektir.
