PETROGRAPHICAL AND MINERALOGICAL PROPERTIES OF THE POST COLLISIONAL CALC-ALKALINE VOLCANISM IN CENTRAL SAKARYA ZONE, (SARICAKAYA - ESKİŞEHİR)

Öz

The investigated area is located in central Sakarya zone (Eskişehir). The volcanic rocks outcrop dominantly intermediate- felsic rocks as a W-E extending orientation in the central segment of the Sakarya Zone, the north of the İzmir-Ankara suture zone (IASZ). The volcanic activity of central Sakarya zone produced acidic and intermediate volcanic rocks. In this paper, we present mineralogical and petrographical characteristics of pyroclastic material and lava flows from west and east of areas. The volcanics are lava flows and pyroclastics, namely Bozaniç lavas, agglomerates, İğdir lavas and Kapıkaya tuffs. Petrographically, the Bozaniç lavas are mainly andesite and less dacite, consisting of primarily of plagioclase (oligoclase), amphibole (brown and green hornblende), clinopyroxene and biotite. The İğdir lavas are mainly dacite and less andesite, containing plagioclase (oligoclase, andesine), amphibole (brown hornblende), biotite and quartz. The secondary epidote, calcite and rarely quartz are also present due to prophylitic alteration in altered plagioclase and hornblend crystals and pores of the Sarıcakaya volcanites. These volcanic rocks show well-developed columnar jointing and flow structure with thicknesses of 2.0 cm. to 20 cm. Petrochemically, both Bozaniç and İğdir lavas exhibit medium- to high- K calc-alkaline character. Some samples of the volcanic rocks exhibit various degrees of alteration in the investigated area. The bentonite deposits and other alteration products occurred by alteration of andesitic and dasitic volcanic rocks in Mihalgazi and Sarıcakaya, Central Sakarya Valley. These bentonites are classified in three stratigraphic levels. These units; bentonites in andesitic and dasitic lavas, andesitic agglomerate and tuff.
