The process conducted at Eti Gurnus has complex process control system
and it is working under automation with many instruments. The observation of
analog and digital input/output assigned in all units of the Eti Gumus plant and their
PID control were managed by Distributed Control System (DCS). It was required to
update and/or design new system in order to support new units that will be added in
the future and solve the problems accruing in the software hardware of the DCS. In
addition, proposed control system to Eti Gurnus should not be expensive and it
should be compatible with other systems.
Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
(SCADA) were preferred and used instead of DCS in the system. Ethernet and
Modbus + protocol were used to communicate using all variety of the advanced
technology to obtain user-friendly system.
In this paper. PLC and SCADA were compared with DCS. The design criteria of
control system setup. application of the methods and alternative solution were
explained in detail.
