Senga Nengudi’nin Kavramsal Heykellerinde Toplumsal Cinsiyetin Bedensel Temsili

Öz

Senga Nengudi’nin çalışmaları, 1970’lerden itibaren siyah kadın sanatçıların görünürlüğü, beden politikaları ve alternatif estetik anlayışları bağlamında değerlendirilmektedir. Nengudi, geleneksel heykel anlayışını dönüştürerek bedenin bireysel ve toplumsal boyutlarını pantolon çorabı, kum ve plastik gibi gündelik malzemeler aracılığıyla ele alır. Bu esnek ve geçirgen malzemeler, kadın bedenine dair deneyimleri görünür kılarken hegemonik cinsiyet normlarını sorgulayan bir estetik strateji sunar. Araştırma, fenomenolojik yöntem ve vaka analizine dayalı olup izleyici-‐eser ilişkisini ve sanatçının R.S.V.P. serisi ile Ceremony for Freeway Fets performansını ayrıntılı biçimde incelemektedir. Bulgular, Nengudi’nin malzeme ve performans kullanımının beden, kimlik ve cinsiyet üzerine eleştirel bir söylem geliştirdiğini göstermektedir. Sonuç olarak sanatçının pratiği, feminist teori, antropoloji ve çağdaş sanat arasında güçlü bir köprü kurarak disiplinlerarası bir yenilik ortaya koymaktadır.

Embodied Representations of Gender in Senga Nengudi’s Conceptual Sculptures

Öz

Senga Nengudi’s work has been examined within the context of Black women artists’ visibility, body politics, and alternative aesthetic approaches since the 1970s. Nengudi transforms conventional sculptural practices by exploring both the individual and social dimensions of the body through everyday materials such as pantyhose, sand, and plastic. These flexible and permeable materials render women’s bodily experiences visible while offering an aesthetic strategy that challenges hegemonic gender norms. The study employs a phenomenological method and case analysis, focusing on the viewer–artwork relationship and providing an in-depth examination of the artist’s R.S.V.P. series and Ceremony for Freeway Fets performance. The findings indicate that Nengudi’s use of material and performance develops a critical discourse on body, identity, and gender. Ultimately, her practice establishes a strong bridge between feminist theory, anthropology, and contemporary art, contributing to a distinct form of interdisciplinary innovation
