Perceived Physical and Cognitive Fatigue in Active Athletes

Öz

The aim of this study was to examine perceived physical and cognitive fatigue among active athletes and to determine whether fatigue differed by gender, age, and national athlete status. A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was used, and 276 athletes participated. Data were collected using the Perceived Physical and Cognitive Fatigue Scale, which has physical and cognitive fatigue subdimensions. Internal consistency was high for the total scale (Cronbach’s α = .945). Independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation were used. Physical fatigue did not differ significantly by gender, but cognitive fatigue was higher among female athletes (p = .006). Non-national athletes reported higher physical fatigue than national athletes (p = .023), whereas cognitive fatigue did not differ significantly by national status. Physical fatigue differed across age groups (p = .027), but cognitive fatigue did not (p = .297). Physical and cognitive fatigue were strongly and positively associated (r = .710, p < .01). These findings support monitoring physical and cognitive fatigue together. Coaches may review athletes’ fatigue reports alongside training load, sleep, recovery, and performance indicators. Because the sample came from a specific institutional context and financial or socioeconomic status was not measured, findings should be generalized cautiously; future multi-site studies should include more diverse samples and socioeconomic indicators.
