Effects of Progesterone Supplementation Administered Between Days 8 and 16 After Mating on Reproductive Performance in Goats

Öz

This study was conducted to determine the effects of progesterone administered to goats after mating on pregnancy rates and the number of lambs born. The goats included in the synchronization protocol were divided into two groups: a control group and a progesterone administration group. Following mating, progesterone-impregnated intravaginal sponges were administered to the animals in the study group on day 8 after mating to support early pregnancy, and these sponges were removed on day 16. All animals underwent a 30-day pregnancy examination evaluated by ultrasonography. Pregnancy rates and twin-triplet distributions obtained during the birth period were recorded. The findings indicate that, despite a numerical increase in reproductive parameters in the group administered progesterone, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of pregnancy rate and lambing efficiency (P>0.05). This situation reveals that progesterone administered between days 8 and 16 after mating did not significantly improve reproductive performance in synchronized goats. In conclusion, it was concluded that post-mating progesterone administration may be economically beneficial, but more studies involving a larger number of goats are needed before it can be recommended as a routine practice.
