Effects of Vitamin C and Mineral Supplementation on Some Hematological and Biochemical Parameters in Ewes during Pregnancy and Lactation

In ruminants, the periparturient period (late pregnancy and early lactation) is a critical phase where metabolic demands increase, and oxidative stress develops. This study investigated the effects of vitamin C, mineral mixtures, and their combined applications on hematological and some biochemical parameters in ewes during pregnancy and lactation. A total of 60 healthy İvesi ewes were randomly divided into four groups (n=15). Group G1 (control) received saline solution, while groups G2 (vitamin C), G3 (mineral), and G4 (vitamin C + mineral) received the relevant supplements from the 3rd month of pregnancy until parturition. Blood samples were collected in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th months of pregnancy, and in the 1st and 3rd months of lactation. Complete blood counts and serum biochemical parameters were analyzed in the samples. In comparisons between the groups, compared to the control group, the supplemented groups showed statistically significant increases in HGB, RBC, HCT (p<0.01), MCV, TP (p<0.05), and Mg (p<0.001) levels during pregnancy, and in urea (p<0.001) and K (p<0.01) levels during lactation. Conversely, a decrease in Na (p<0.05) levels was recorded during lactation. In within-group evaluations, significant time-dependent changes were observed in WBC, HGB, MCV, MCH, MCHC, ALP, AST, CK, LDH, TP, CREA, urea, Mg, and Na parameters in all study groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, combined vitamin-mineral mixtures (G4) in ewes during pregnancy and lactation were found to exhibit more comprehensive efficacy in supporting the hematological profile and maintaining electrolyte balance compared to single applications.
