Beyond Competitive Positioning: Developing an Integrated Strategic Adaptability Framework (ISAF) for Contemporary Organisations

Öz

Strategic management has accumulated half a century of theoretical development while remaining, in a consequential respect, fragmented: competitive positioning, organisational capabilities, institutional legitimacy, digital governance, sustainability, and resilience have each advanced as largely separate research programmes, with the dynamic interactions among them left insufficiently theorised. This paper addresses that gap directly. Drawing on Porter's competitive strategy framework, the Resource-Based View, Institutional Theory, and Systems Theory and extending them with contemporary digital governance and sustainability scholarship it proposes the Integrated Strategic Adaptability Framework (ISAF), a conceptual model built around six interdependent dimensions. The framework is developed through systematic conceptual review and comparative case analysis of four sectorally diverse organisations: Tesco, Komatsu, The Body Shop, and Oxfam. The central argument is that sustainable competitive advantage is not reducible to any single strategic variable; it emerges as a property of coherent alignment across all six ISAF dimensions. Deficiency in any one dimension constrains the contribution of the remaining five. The paper advances strategic management theory by articulating the relationships among its principal traditions, and advances practice by providing a structured diagnostic instrument for identifying governance misalignments that limit long-run competitive performance.
