Omega-3 Fatty Acid Supplementation and Sepsis

Yıl 2024, Cilt: 1 Sayı: 2 (Aralık), 1 - 9, 26.12.2024

Öz

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids and have basic tasks such as strengthening the immune system, reducing inflammation in the body, showing anti-inflammatory effect. Omega-3 fatty acids are essential and abundant in oily fish and seafood such as sardines, anchovies, salmon, mackerel. Sepsis is a serious type of systemic inflammatory response that can result in single or multiple organ failures and death at the end of these processes. This review focuses on the use of omega-3 fatty acids in sepsis. In the studies, it was observed that the use of omega-3 reduced the levels of CRP, IL-6, WBC, PCT and showed a significant decrease in the length of stay in intensive care. Omega-3 use is a useful treatment option in the treatment of sepsis. Further research with large-scale, randomized controlled trials are recommended for the effect of omega-3 use on sepsis.
