A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF WORLD ENGLISHES AND ENGLISH AS A LINGUA FRANCA RESEARCH IN ELT: EMERGING TRENDS AND PEDAGOGICAL IMPLICATIONS

Öz

The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the emerging trends and pedagogical implications in research conducted in World Englishes (WE) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). Drawing from 30 studies indexed in credible databases related to English Language Teaching (ELT) from 2019 to 2024, the analysis identifies the general patterns in terms of study context, education context, and methodology along with emerging themes and challenges. Findings report both the longstanding preference for native speaker norms and that also a rise in culture inclusivity and linguistic diversity. Thus, this systematic review attends to the intersection of WE, ELF, and ELT and provides directions for future research and pedagogical innovation in relation to geographical representation, curriculum design, course materials and teacher education in order to balance native norms with inclusive frameworks, ultimately preparing learners for global communication. Future research directions are proposed to bridge gaps in these neglected areas.
