Digital Media, Violence, and Educational Contexts: Mapping the Intellectual and Thematic Evolution of Research Through Bibliometric Analysis (1992–2026)

Öz

This study explores the intellectual development and thematic transformation of research focusing on digital media, violence, and educational environments through a bibliometric approach. As digital communication technologies increasingly shape the daily experiences of children and adolescents, concerns regarding cyberbullying, online aggression, harmful media exposure, and digitally mediated victimization have become more visible within educational discourse. The dataset consisted of SSCI-indexed articles retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection covering the period between 1992 and 2026. Bibliometric analyses were conducted using the Bibliometrix R package and the Biblioshiny interface. The analysis included publication trends, citation structures, keyword co-occurrence patterns, thematic evolution, and country-level scientific production. The findings revealed a substantial increase in publication activity, particularly after the mid-2010s. Frequently recurring concepts included violence, aggression, media exposure, adolescents, and behavioral outcomes, while recent studies increasingly emphasized cyberbullying, discrimination, victimization, and social media environments. The results further demonstrated that educational dimensions of the field remain comparatively less central than communication- and violence-oriented themes. By identifying conceptual shifts and intellectual patterns within the literature, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how digital culture and media-related violence are discussed in educational research. The findings also highlight the growing importance of critical media literacy, digital citizenship, and preventive educational approaches addressing online aggression and digital harm.
