Meta-analysis of the impact of land use on urban resilience in the context of urban renewal

Abstract

Urban renewal is a major pathway for restructuring urban space and optimizing urban functions. A central objective is to enhance urban resilience in the face of growing environmental and social uncertainties. Urban renewal reshapes both land-use configuration and development intensity, which in turn constitutes a key mechanism for strengthening urban resilience. Although a growing literature examines land use–resilience linkages, the evidence remains fragmented and often case-specific, limiting its generalizability and actionable policy implications. Therefore, this study employs a meta-analysis using Stata software and systematically retrieves relevant empirical studies published in databases including Web of Science, Wanfang Data and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria, We included 5 independent studies and extracted 14 effect sizes (multiple outcomes per study handled using multilevel/RVE”). A random-effects model was applied to estimate the pooled effect size of land use optimization on urban resilience. Subgroup analyses and meta-regression were conducted to examine the moderating effects of different land use types, resilience dimensions, and urban renewal modes. The meta-analysis results indicate that: (1) Within the context of urban renewal, land use has a significant positive effect on urban resilience; (2) considerable heterogeneity was observed among the included studies, with land use types and urban renewal modes identified as the primary sources of heterogeneity, while the influence of resilience dimensions is relatively weaker; and (3) subgroup characteristics show that the redevelopment mode exhibits the strongest resilience-enhancing effect, followed by comprehensive improvement, whereas conservation-oriented renewal demonstrates the weakest effect, indicating that greater renewal intensity is associated with more pronounced positive changes in resilience structures. Among different land use types, Type 2 (building densification) shows the most significant effect on enhancing urban resilience.
