Clinical Internship Experiences of Intern Physiotherapy Students From the Perspective of Perceived Musculoskeletal Disorders, Ergonomic Awareness, Fatigue, and Quality of Life: A Multicentered Cross-Sectional Study

Öz

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the perceived musculoskeletal system disorders (PMSDs), ergonomic awareness, fatigue, and quality of life (QoL) of physiotherapy students during clinical internship practices. Material and Methods: 163 students from three different state universities completed the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ), specific ergonomic awareness questions that scored 0-10, the Fatigue Impact Scale (FIS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Scale-Brief Form Turkish Version (WHOQOL-BREF-TR) face-to-face. Results: 31.9% of the students were regular exercisers and severe musculoskeletal complaints in the neck were significantly higher in non-exercisers (79.6% vs 20.4%). Severe complaints were more common in females in the neck (p<.001), right shoulder (p=.024), left shoulder (p=.023), upper back (p<.001), and right upper arm (p=.007). The mean scores of ergonomic awareness questions ranged from 4.02-6.07. FIS social subdomain was significantly higher than other subdomains (social vs. cognitive, and social vs. physical(p<.001)). FIS total was significantly and negatively correlated with all WHOQOL-BREF subdomains (physical (r=-.675, p<.001), psychological (r=-.431, p<.001), social (r=-321, p<.001), environmental (r=-.498, p<.001)). The WHOQOL-BREF physical subdomain was significantly correlated with regular exercise habits (r=-.162, p=.039). Discussion: Establishing physical activity habits from an early period and paying attention to ergonomic principles may have a positive impact on PMSDs, fatigue, and the QoL that physiotherapists may experience during their physiotherapy practice.
