Holistic Perspectives on Quality of Life: Social, Psychological, and Physical Aspects of Obesity

Öz

Objectives: Obesity is an important public health problem closely associated with morbidity and mortality. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can be affected by many physical, psychological and social factors in these individuals. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the multiple factors affecting HRQoL in pre-obese and obese individuals. Material and Methods: Pre-obese and obese individuals' physical activity levels were measured with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form, fatigue severity with the Fatigue Severity Scale, sleepiness with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, depressive symptoms with the Beck Depression Inventory, eating behaviors with the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire, social connectedness with the Social Connectedness Scale, and HRQoL with the Patient-Reported Outcomes in Obesity Questionnaire. Results: Two hundred and sixty-three individuals were included in the study. Increased body mass index (p<0.001), fatigue (p<0.001), depressive symptoms (p<0.001), uncontrolled eating behavior (p<0.001), decreased physical activity level (p<0.001), and social connection (p=0.023) were found to negatively affect quality of life. The coefficient of determination was 0.609. Discussion: It is very important to determine the predictors affecting HRQoL in multidimensional pre-obese and obese adults. Our study is expected to provide a comprehensive look at the variables affecting HRQoL in pre-obese and obese adults.
