Representation of Family and Fragility of Form: An Analysis on New Turkish Cinema

Öz

The concept of family has a notable position in Turkish cinema history. During the Yeşilçam, family was central in the majority of films. The story was built around testing its unity, and the resolution of the conflict was achieved by restoring that unity. During this period, films were also shaped according to the classical structure on the formal level, and the structure was built according to a certain unity and causality. In New Turkish cinema, however, expansion and instability are evident in terms of content, while on the formal level there has been flexibility, fragmentation, and an observational perspective. This study aims to discover how the concept of family in New Turkish cinema exhibits a sense of integrity regarding form and theme. In that sense, Reha Erdem's My Only Sunshine (2008), Yeşim Ustaoğlu's Pandora's Box (2008), and Seren Yüce's Majority (2010) were examined using a purposive sampling method. The study concluded that films centered on the concept of family in New Turkish cinema are constructed according to a fragmented structure in terms of content and form, and that this stems from unresolved conflicts on a social level and the emergence of individual crises resulting from the breakdown of collective unity.
