From Alienation to Ecological Awareness: Ecocritical Perspectives on Brechtian Dramaturgy

Öz

Ecology emerged in the nineteenth century as a biological discipline concerned with relations between species and their organic and inorganic environments. Over time, it developed into an interdisciplinary field engaging sociology, anthropology, political science, economics, history, and the arts. Ecocriticism, which explores the cultural and literary dimensions of ecological thought, reconnects nature and culture by showing how environmental problems are closely linked to social injustice, war, exploitation, and ideological domination. This study interprets Bertolt Brecht’s epic theatre through an ecocritical perspective, arguing that ecological methods can clarify the structural dynamics of his dramaturgy. Applying ecological theory to dramatic form, it examines a relatively rare intersection in scholarship. Brecht’s representation of oppressor–oppressed and exploiter–exploited relations reflects wider anthropocentric hierarchies shaping humanity’s relation to nature. The techniques of epic theatre, including estrangement, episodic structure, montage, and didactic narration, challenge habitual perception and present society as an unstable ecosystem marked by inequality. From an ecocritical viewpoint, epic theatre reveals not only social and political contradictions but also ecological imbalance and human domination of nature.
