The relationship between oxidative stress and selenium

Abstract

Oxidative stress is characterized by an imbalance between prooxidant molecules in cells and tissues and antioxidant molecules that try to detoxify these reactives molecules. Oxidative stress is affected by both genetic and environmental factors. Selenium is an essential trace element and inadequacy can lead to various types of diseases, such as cancer and heart disease. Foods are the main source of Selenium, and it is commonly found in seafood, grains, meat products, milk, vegetables and fruits. Selenium is an enzyme with antioxidant properties and is included in the structure of seleno enzymes. In this article, the metabolism and antioxidant properties of selenium are reviewed.
