The Relationship Between Perceived Social Support and Hope with Physical Activity in Elderly Individuals with Chronic Disease: A Cross-Sectional Study
Öz
Objective: To examine the relationship between perceived social support, hope, and physical activity among older adults with chronic disease. Methods: The study was conducted in a state hospital between January and March 2024. The sample consisted of 175 individuals aged 65 years and older who had at least one chronic disease and a Standardized Mini-Mental Test score of 24 or higher. Data were collected using a Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), the Dispositional Hope Scale, and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE). Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were used. Results: The mean age of the participants was 72.4±6.8 years, and 59.4% were female. Mean scores were 44.45±9.35 for hope, 52.41±17.31 for perceived social support, and 50.48±60.78 for physical activity. Contrary to the study hypotheses, no significant relationship was found between physical activity and perceived social support (r=0.047, p=0.537) or hope (r=0.035, p=0.646). Conclusion: Perceived social support and hope were not associated with physical activity. These findings suggest that physical activity behavior in older adults may not be explained solely by psychosocial resources and that other determinants, including functional capacity, physical capability, and environmental conditions, should also be considered.
