PERCEPTION OF THE “OTHER”: GENDER BIASES AND DISCRIMINATIONIN SPORTS SECTOR PERCEIVED BY THE WOMEN
Abstract
This research focuses on the target group of women fitness trainers and managers in private sports facilities in Ankara’s central districts and explores how this group perceives the gender bias and gender discrimination. Furthermore, the links and the degree of the relations between these perceptions and the “individual’s intention to quit her job” and the “organizational commitment of the individuals” are also inquired. The private sports facilities in Ankara’s central districts, which employ women as fitness trainers and managers are grouped based on the location of the facility, socio-economic status of the members of the facilities and the membership fees of the facilities. In order to reflect the target group in most precise manner, the surveys are applied to the 18 facilities selected based upon these groupings. The sample space of the research consists of the 75 trainers and 14 managers, a total of 89 women employee who works in these facilities. The Perceived Gender Bias and Discrimination (Onay, 2009) scale, whose validity and reliability check is performed by Onay, is used in this research. The data are obtained by survey method and analyzed via a statistical package program (SPSS 16.00). As a conclusion, it is found out that women trainers perceive discrimination more than the women managers and the organizational commitment of women managers are higher. The perceived gender discrimination is found out to affect organizational commitment of individual inversely and individual’s intention to quit her job in positive direction.
