New Inscriptions from Nikaia XXII: Roman Soldiers from Nikaia

Abstract

This article presents two newly discovered funerary inscriptions from the modern districts of Göynük (Bolu Province) and Yenipazar (Bilecik Province), located in the eastern territory of Nikaia, belonging to a veteranus of Legio V Macedonica and to a possible Roman soldier. The deceased are identified as Lucius Domitius -isicus or Eisi(a)cus/ Isi(a)cus(?) and Marcus Sertorius Vitelianus. It also presents the name Kadas, which appears in the tomb inscription of M. Sertorius Vitelianus and is attested for the first time in Nikaia.

Thanks

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums, and its officials for granting me an official research permit in 2014 to continue and complete the project initiated by Dr. Filiz Dönmez-Öztürk in 2012–2013. I am also grateful to Kerem Süleyman Yüksel, then District Governor of Mudurnu, for making a vehicle from the Mudurnu District Governor’s Office available to our team during the 2014 fieldwork; to Mehmet İnegöl, then Mayor of Mudurnu, for providing accommodation at the Babas Thermal Hotel; and to archaeologist Adem Gündüz and epigraphist Ezgi Demirhan-Öztürk (Koç University, PhD), who assisted in copying the inscriptions and contributed to the fieldwork with great dedication. Part of this study was written during my research stay at DAI-AEK in June 2026. I am sincerely grateful to Prof. Dr. Christof Schuler, Director of the DAI-AEK, for his kind invitation and for providing me with the opportunity to conduct my research there. I would also like to thank Dr. Florian Matei-Popescu (Institute of Archaeology Vasile Pârvan) for his valuable suggestions, particularly regarding Inscription No. 2, and Prof. Dr. Ferit Baz (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) for his helpful comments. I am also grateful to the anonymous reviewers and the editors of Gephyra for their valuable suggestions, which have contributed significantly to improving this article, and to Ulaş Yalvaç (Instructor, Sabancı University) for his help in improving the language and style of this paper.
