Psychological Meaning in Surrealist Photography: The Case of Man Ray

Öz

The photograph, which is declared as a scientific invention, has a direct relation with technology. For example, the archive created by drawing criminals’ portraits contributed to the science of criminalism, and the removal of the movements of animals in low shutter speeds provided the correctness of mistakes in the drawings of painters due to their perceptions. Artists who expanded their expressions with the technical diversity of the 19th century have also tried to describe situations of human psychology other than science. Surrealists in this regard have shown interest in the work of Sigmund Freud. Thus, some concepts in psychoanalysis reflect as the form or content of the works of the artists. In this study, artistic reflections in the context of psychology will be discussed with some technical possibilities for the formation of photographic expression. In particular, the artworks produced as a result of the techniques used by surreal artists in their photographs will be tried to be exploited by using psychoanalysis.

Gerçeküstücü Fotoğraflarda Psikolojik Anlam: Man Ray Örneği

Bilimsel bir icat olarak ilan edilen fotoğrafın teknoloji ile doğrudan bir ilişkisi bulunmaktadır. Örneğin suçlu insanların portrelerinin çekilmesiyle oluşturulan arşivle kriminalistik bilimine katkıda bulunulurken, hayvanların hareketlerinin düşük enstantanede pozlanarak çekilmesiyle, ressamların o güne kadarki algılarından kaynaklanan çizimlerindeki yanlışlıkların düzeltilmesi sağlanmıştır. 19. yüzyıldaki teknik çeşitlilikle birlikte ifade alanları genişleyen sanatçılar, bilim dışında insan psikolojisine dair durumları da anlatmayı denemişlerdir. Bu konuda gerçeküstücü sanatçılar, Sigmund Freud’un çalışmalarına ilgi göstermişlerdir. Böylelikle psikanalizdeki bazı kavramlar, sanatçıların eserlerine biçim veya içerik olarak yansımıştır. Bu çalışmada, fotoğrafik ifade biçimi oluşturulmasını sağlayan bazı teknik imkanların, psikoloji bağlamındaki sanatsal yansımaları ele alınacaktır. Özellikle gerçeküstücü sanatçıların fotoğraflarında kullandıkları teknikler sonucunda ortaya çıkan eserler, psikanalizden faydalanılarak açıklanmaya çalışılacaktır.
