The Relationship Between Financial Technology Sector and Growth in Kenya

Öz

The study aims to evaluate the relationship between fintech sector and growth in Kenya in the short run. The study employed secondary quarterly data from 2010Q1 to 2024Q4. Mobile money usage, payment card usage, fintech penetration, and M-Pesa revenue were used to proxy fintech sector. Investment rates, unemployment rates, inflation rates, and banks' interest on lending were employed as control variables. Growth was measured in terms of real GDP. The study adopted a quantitative explanatory research design and an Autoregressive Distributed lag (ARDL) model for data analysis. Fintech sector had a short-run relationship with growth in Kenya. The Error Correction Term of -0.59 indicated that any deviation from the long-run equilibrium was corrected at a speed of 59.1% towards the long-run equilibrium each quarter. ARDL bound testing indicated an F-statistic of 4.594, which was highly significant (1%), which confirmed the presence of a long-run relationship and also validated the short-run positive interplay between fintech sector and growth in Kenya. Fintech sector is a crucial pillar of growth in Kenya. It is a positive contributor to aggregate productivity in the short-term. It has heightened money velocity, financial inclusion and lowered transaction time and costs, thus increasing economic participation. All the fintech proxies exhibited a positive short-run relationship with growth, except for mobile money usage. This underscores the disruptive nature of mobile money to existing financial institutions in the short run. The study advances a step higher compared to previous studies by employing diverse fintech indicators such as mobile money usage, payment card usage, and M-Pesa revenue, which is one of the fintech firms in Kenya, to assess the interplay between the fintech sector and growth in a multidimensional way. Furthermore, the ARDL model is being employed in the study, which captures the short-term relationship between fintech sector and growth
