Investigation into Students’ Perception of Industrial Design as a Prospective Career

Öz

Students’ perception of a discipline determines their career choice in that respect. Despite that the curriculum of the Industrial design field encourages the development of creative skills most needed in the era of advanced and fast-paced technological development, students’ lack of adequate knowledge of what the course entails can largely discourage their decision-making towards the course in choosing their prospective career. Therefore, this study investigates students’ career perception of Industrial Design as it is offered in Nigerian tertiary institutions concerning career awareness, the consciousness of inherent creative skills, gender suitability, and lucrativeness. A survey was conducted and responses were elicited from 500 respondents, comprising secondary school students within Southwestern Nigeria. Based on the results of the finding, recommendations were provided to stakeholders in the field of Industrial Design on ways to promote the discipline in the country, given its immense potentialities for job creation and poverty alleviation.
