The cypress tree ornament seen on the cone of the pavilion-type minbar (pulpit) of the Alaybey Mosque in the Şahinbey district of Gaziantep province adds iconographic meanings to the minbar. The cypress tree ornament, which is frequently used in the art of the Ottoman period, is also seen on the Alaybey Mosque Minbar cone, which dates to the years of Hijri 1235 Gregorian 1809-20. In the composition, cypress trees, solar courses (stars, planets, galaxies), and abstract human figures were used together. The ornament, embroidered in abstract style by an artist whose name is not yet known, is considered important as it contains many iconographic subjects. The cypress tree, which is depicted abstractly, resembles a tall tree with its head in the heavens in one aspect, while in another aspect it resembles a tree that burns and scatters lights around it. The solar courses are red circles, macro representing the sun, stars, and planets, and micro abstract enough to represent objects such as atoms and seeds. Since the cypress tree derives from the cult of the tree of life, which is as old as humanity, it has found its place in iconographic depictions.
