Problematic Media Use in Early Childhood: The Role of Attachment Styles and Screen Time

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 10 Sayı: 2, 204 - 223

Öz

The objective of the research is to investigate the correlation between the screen time of children and their parents, children's attachment styles, and problematic media use in early childhood. The research is structured as a correlational research design, which is one of the quantitative research models. 57 children and their parents, aged 60-72 months, participated in the survey. They were enrolled in preschool education at five different institutions located in the central districts of Şanlıurfa. Attachment Story Completion Task was administered individually to the children, the Problematic Media Use Measure (PMUM) was completed by the parents, and the Demographic Information Form was used to collect the data for the research. The results of the analyses indicated that child screen time is a significant predictor of children's problematic media use. Furthermore, attachment style, child screen time, and parental screen time significantly predicted children’s problematic media use. The study findings highlighted that fathers reported significantly higher screen time than mothers. This research suggests that the current screen time has a stronger connection with problematic media use than attachment experiences.
