Katib Çelebi, A Pioneer of Modern Ottoman Geography and Cartography
Öz
Katib Çelebi, the most influential figure in 17th-century Ottoman modernisation and geography, deserves to be recognised as a pioneer of Ottoman geography and cartography thanks to his distinctive personality and versatility. His visionary nature is reflected both in his lifetime and in his enduring impact and legacy. Katib Çelebi’s curiosity regarding science and research; his works, forming the cornerstones of modern Ottoman geography and cartography; and his role as a scientific bridge between East and West set him apart from his contemporaries. In this context, the article analyses Katib Çelebi’s versatility and his intellectual and scientific mind-set from a variety of angles. It argues that his role as a pioneer of modern Ottoman geography and cartography was influenced by his personality and scientific expertise, as well as by his ability to synthesise the bodies of knowledge from the East and West. Furthermore, the article highlights the importance of evaluating Katib Çelebi’s works using primary sources, noting that this will facilitate a better analysis of his intellectual world.
