Taxonomical and chorologial notes for a new alien plant species recorded from Türkiye: Euphorbia hypericifolia L. (Euphorbiaceae)

Abstract

The presence of Euphorbia hypericifolia is reported for the first time in Türkiye, it is a neophyte native to tropical and subtropical America. It has been previously recorded as a newly introduced alien plant species in some Southern Europe and North African countries within the Mediterranean Basin. The first observation in Türkiye was reported by a citizen scientist in 2018 on the Floranatolica website. In 2024, herbarium samples were collected from Düzce University's Ornamental and Medicinal Plants Botanical Garden (DUSTBB); identified and recorded in the Düzce University Faculty of Forestry Herbarium (DUOF). In this article, morphological, ecological, chorological and taxonomic notes on E. hypericifolia are discussed and the invasion risk of this species is assessed.
