Humor can be defined as a funny, entertaining movement or
expression, anything that contributes someone to have fun or as a laughing
object. As the power of humour in decreasing the stress of patients was
understood, it was begun to be used as theraupatically by nurses. Humour
therapy can be applied to elderly people, children and oncology and psychiatry
patients as individual or group therapy. Many techniques can be used in humour
therapy such as laughing exercises, comic videos, books and photographs, jokes,
comic audio cassettes and comedy clips. Purpose of this study is to analyze the
benefits of humour therapy, used techniques and the conducted studies about
humour therapy. It has been observed in the conducted studies that humor
therapy reduces the perception of loneliness experienced by patients, increases
life satisfaction and it has positive effects on the quality of life and quick
recovery of individuals when it is used additionally to medical
treatments. Humor therapy can easily be
applied by nurses as a complementary therapy in the treatment of patients. The
number of national studies conducted in that field is also highly limited. For that reason, it is required the studies
on the use and effects of humour therapy in nursery practices.
