Rediscovery of a Taxon Lost for Nearly One Hundred and Fifty Years: The Puzzle of the Location of Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata

Türkiye is one of the key countries in Campanula diversity in the Mediterranean Basin, holding more than half of the basin’s endemic Campanula species. According to its morphological features, Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata belongs to Campanula subgen. Campanula sect. Platysperma. Sect. Platysperma is mostly composed of perennial polycarpic or perennial monocarpic casmophyte species. Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata is morphologically closely related to C. ptarmicifolia var. ptarmicifolia, C. munzurensis, C. trachyphylla, C. oligosperma and C. ovacikensis. It can be easily distinguished from these taxa by its indumentum, flower morphology, leaf morphology and inflorescence. The type location of C. ptarmicifolia var. capitellata, which is the subject of the article, was until today known to be in Malatya. However, during the TUBITAK project carried out by the authors between 2014-2018, it was discovered that it is, in fact, located in Sivas. In the study conducted on field and herbarium samples, the known locations to this day were re-evaluated and its distribution was updated. With this study, it was concluded that the distribution area of this variety is from two locations in Türkiye: Sivas and Erzincan. Yüzelli Yıla Yakın Süredir Kayıp Bir Taksonun Yeniden Keşfi: Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata’nın Lokasyon Bilmecesi

Öz

Türkiye barındırdığı yarısından fazlası endemik Campanula türleri ile Akdeniz Havzası’ndaki Campanula çeşitliliğinde anahtar ülkelerden biridir. Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata morfolojik özelliklerine göre Campanula subgen. Campanula sect. Platysperma’ya aittir. Sect. Platysperma çoğunlukla çok yıllık polikarpik veya çok yıllık monokarpik kazmofit türlerden oluşmaktadır. Campanula ptarmicifolia var. capitellata taksonu C. ptarmicifolia var. ptarmicifolia, C. munzurensis, C. trachyphylla, C. oligosperma ve C. ovacikensis ile morfolojik olarak yakından ilişkilidir. Bu takson tüy tipi, çiçek morfolojisi, yaprak morfolojileri ve çiçek durumları ile yakın akraba taksonlardan kolayca ayrılır. Makalenin konusu olan C. ptarmicifolia var. capitellata’nın tip lokasyonu bu güne kadar Malatya Göldağı olarak bilinmekteydi. Ancak yazarlar tarafından 2014-2018 yılları arasında gerçekleştirilen TUBİTAK projesi esnasında bu lokasyonun esasen Sivas “Göl Dağı” olduğu keşfedilmiştir. Arazi ve herbaryum örnekleri üzerinden yapılan çalışmada bu güne kadarki bilinen lokasyonları yeniden değerlendirilmiş ve yayılışı güncellenmiştir. Bu çalışma ile birlikte bu varyetenin yayılış alanı Türkiye’de iki noktadan (Sivas ve Erzincan) olduğuna kanaat getirilmiştir. Ayrıca türün teşhis karakterleri, tam tanımı ve kapsamlı fotoğraflar burada verilmiştir.
