The Magic of Empathic Communication in Labour
Öz
Midwifery is a health discipline grounded in professional, compassionate care and effective, person-centered communication. Within this context, empathy stands at the core of midwifery practice, serving as a fundamental concept that enables the accurate assessment of pregnant women’s physical, emotional, and cognitive needs. The literature indicates that empathic communication enhances women’s sense of safety during the childbirth process, reduces stress and anxiety, and significantly increases satisfaction with care. Expectations of pregnant women toward midwives commonly include smiling, therapeutic touch, active and nonjudgmental listening, communicating in clear and understandable language, providing encouragement, and offering adequate information—elements that reflect an empathy-based approach. These components shape not only the technical dimension of midwifery care but also its holistic, supportive, and trust-enhancing nature. This review highlights the central role of empathy in midwifery practice and demonstrates that strengthening midwives’ communication skills has a substantial impact on improving maternal health outcomes and fostering a more positive childbirth experience.
