The Sonification of the p53 Gene

Öz

The mapping of the sequences of our genes by the Human Genome Project, which is perhaps one of the greatest discoveries in human history, has been groundbreaking in the world of science, also motivated the intensification of interdisciplinary studies. In recent years, translating DNA into musical notes has become an interesting topic for scientists and has been the subject of numerous studies. In these studies, also known as DNA sonification, different DNA music translation methods have been used in the music creation process, referring to DNA codons, RNA codons, or the corresponding amino acids. In this project, a different algorithm was used to create music that could express musicality based on the DNA sequence of a segment of the p53 gene (human p53 gene, exon 4 and cds segment). Python programming language was used in this project because it allows for faster development with less code. The nucleotides of the relevant gene were matched with note values and rhythm patterns in binary combinations using Python programming language, and the data converted to notation with MIDI was played with different instruments in a digital environment within the Cubase application, and an animation was prepared and converted to video. We believe that the ongoing research aimed at developing a universal and easily applicable algorithm for DNA music will increase interest in the field of Biology and provide opportunities to contribute to the pharmacological treatment of various diseases through Music Therapy.
