Family Support Services in Children’s Hospitals, USA Example
Abstract
According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), '' health, not just the absence of illness and disability
status of the person physically spiritually and socially is a full lifespan. The disease affects the entire family,
especially the individual. Chronic diseases in childhood affect the whole life
of family members. It causes serious problems. The family's structure breaks down during the
child's long-term illness. Studies show that parents experience stress and
depression during their child's illness. With the hospitalization process, the family faces a
new situation. The
family's quality of life changed. in this process the family need healthy, planned and
comprehensive support. Many children's hospitals around the world are
implementing programs and centers to support
families. Objectıves: To examine the Family Support Centers and
their functioning in five children's hospitals in the United States (USA).
Materıals and Methods: The inclusion criteria were determined and the
hospitals meeting these criteria were elected. Results: Two main
categories were examined as services and personnel provided at the centers. The
professionals working in the center and their work areas are also explained.
Child Life specialist, Child life
assistant, and Music Therapist are some of the professions introduced. Conclusion:
It is hoped that the study will give an idea about Family Support Centers for
use in children's hospitals in Turkey.
