Bulgular: DASÖ-21'in kesme değerlerine göre ortalama zihinsel sağlık yükleri normal sınırlardaydı.

Investigation of Occupational Therapy Students' Occupational Balance, Mental Health Burden and Social Problem Solving Skills in the COVID-19 Pandemic

Yıl 2022, Cilt: 9 Sayı: 1, 63 - 80, 30.04.2022

Öz

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the effect of socio-demographic characteristics on occupational balance and relationships between occupational balance, mental health burden, and social problem-solving skills of university students in the Covid-19 pandemic.
Materials and Methods: The study included 233 college students aged 18 to 30. A cross-sectional study was designed, the surveys were disseminated online to collect data. The students' occupational balance was evaluated with the Occupational Balance Questionnaire (OBQ11-T), mental health burden with the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and social problem-solving skills with the Social Problem-Solving Skills Inventory Short Form (SSSI-SF). The relationships of the scales were analysed with the Pearson Correlation test. The effect of the variables on occupational balance was examined by linear Cross-sectional Regression Analysis.
Results: The mean mental health burdens were in the normal range. There was a negative relationship between occupational balance and depression, anxiety, and stress, while a positive relationship was found with social problem-solving skills. Regression analysis results showed that the variables explained 24% of the change in occupational balance. This effect was determined as 0,177 for social problem-solving skills, -0,307 for depression, and -0,180 for stress.
Conclusion: The results did not confirm the existence of a negative effect of the pandemic period on university students' cognitive health burden but showed that higher occupational balance was significantly associated with better cognitive health burden and social problem-solving skills. Strategies for reducing the burden of cognitive health and improve social problem-solving skills may be appropriate in order to improve occupational balance in university students.
