Investigation of Anxiety, Sleep Quality and Quality of Life in Adolescents with Migraine: A Controlled Study

Öz

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the anxiety, sleep quality (SQ) and quality of life (QOL) of adolescents with migraine and without migraine. The secondary aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between migraine-related disability, QOL, anxiety, and SQ.
Materials and Methods: The study included 30 adolescents with migraine and 30 adolescents without migraine. Beck Anxiety Scale was used for anxiety, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index for SQ, Quality of Life Scale for Children (QOLS) for QOL, and Paediatric Migraine Disability Assessment Score (PedMIDAS) was used to assess migraine-related disability.
Results: The mean age of the adolescents with migraine (F:20/M:10) who participated in the study was 15.60±2.20 years and the mean age of the without migraine (F:11/M:19) was 14.87±2.60 years. The mean PedMIDAS of the adolescents with migraine was 29.03±20.88. Anxiety levels of the adolescents with migraine were higher (p<0.001) and QOL was lower in terms of both sub-parameters and total score (p<0.001). SQ of adolescents with migraine was worse than the without migraine (p<0.001). The scores of subjective SQ, sleep latency, sleep disturbance, and daytime dysfunction parameters were higher in adolescents with migraine compared to the without migraine (p=0.016, p=0.017, p=0.002, p=0.023). In adolescents with migraine, anxiety and SQ were moderately correlated with QOL (r=-0.395; p=0.031, r=-0.419; p=0.021).
Conclusion: Adolescents with migraine are more negatively affected than adolescents without migraine in terms of anxiety, SQ and QOL. Therefore, following these parameters from an early stage will be important for managing symptoms in adolescents with migraine.

Migrenli Adölesanlarda Anksiyete, Uyku Kalitesi ve Yaşam Kalitesinin İncelenmesi: Kontrollü Çalışma

Öz

Amaç: Bu çalışmada migrenli adölesanlarla migreni olmayan adölesanların anksiyete, uyku kalitesi (UK) ve yaşam kalitesinin (YK) karşılaştırılması amaçlandı. Çalışmanın sekonder amacı ise migren kaynaklı yeti yitimi, yaşam kalitesi, anksiyete ve uyku kalitesinin ilişkisinin incelenmesi idi.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Çalışmaya 30 migrenli adölesan ile kontrol grubu olarak 30 migreni olmayan adölesan dahil edildi. Anksiyete için Beck Anksiyete Ölçeği, UK için Pittsburgh Uyku Kalitesi İndeksi ve YK için Çocuklar için Yaşam Kalitesi Ölçeği (ÇİYKÖ), migren kaynaklı yeti yitimini değerlendirmek için ise Pediatrik Migren Dizabilite Değerlendirme Skorlaması (PedMIDAS) kullanıldı.
Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan migrenli adölesanların (K:20/E:10) yaş ortalaması 15,60±2,20, migreni olmayan adölesanların (K:11/E:19) yaş ortalaması 14,87±2,60 idi. Migrenli adölesanların PedMIDAS ortalaması 29,03±20,88 idi. Migrenli adölesanların anksiyete düzeyleri migreni olmayanlara göre daha fazla (p<0,001), yaşam kaliteleri ise hem alt parametreler açısından hem de toplam puan açısından daha düşüktü (p<0,001). Migrenli adölesanların UK’leri migreni olmayanlara göre daha kötü idi (p<0,001). Migrenli adölesanların öznel UK, uyku latansı, uyku bozukluğu, gündüz işlev bozukluğu parametrelerinin puanları migreni olmayanlara göre daha yüksekti (p=0,016, p=0,017, p=0,002, p=0,023). Migrenli adölesanlarda YK ile anksiyete ve UK orta düzeyde ilişkili idi (sırasıyla, r=-0,395; p=0,031, r=-0,419; p=0,021).
Sonuç: Migrenli adölesanlar migrenli olmayan adölesanlara göre anksiyete, UK ve YK açısından daha fazla olumsuz etkilenime sahiptir. Bu nedenle migrenli adölesanlarda bu parametrelerin erken dönemden itibaren takip edilmesi semptomların yönetilmesi açısından önemli olacaktır.
