GREEN WASHING CAMPAIGNS AND THE REFLECTIONS ON MEDIA AGENDA: PRESENTATION OF VOLKSWAGEN EMISSION CRISIS ON AMERICAN PRESS

Through many greenwashing crises, it is revealed that companies based on
corporate environmental marketing concept are providing false and misleading
representations about environmental benefits of their products. Another recent
addition to them is the emission crisis of Volkswagen. In the scope of this
study, it is aimed to investigate the reflections of the sustainability crisis
that Volkswagen has been through, which is considered as a greenwashing
scandal, in American press. The study
consists of the analysis of the 265 news, published between 17 September 2015
and 31 January 2016, about VW’s emission crisis from the online pages of
America’s highest circulation newspapers; The Wall Street Journal, USA Today,
and The New York Times. In the first phase of the analysis, with the aid of the
descriptive analysis, it is aimed to bring the details before, during and after
the VW crisis to light by investigating the published 265 news. In the second
phase of the analysis, it is investigated that how, with which contents and how
often the crisis took place in these media environments. Also, the media’s
perception and way of presentation of greenwashing campaigns were investigated
extensively. As a result of the findings, it is confirmed that the crisis
should be discussed over three periods in terms of the contents and number of
the news; and VW crisis’ appearance and presentation in the news by media
varies according to the periods. The results of the content analysis revealed
that the reflection of the VW crisis in American press can be clarified by 7
themes which are the way how the crisis is considered, environmental damage and
loss, loss of reputation, public response, confession-apology, economic loss
and search for solution- compensation.
