POST-MEMORY AND TRAUMA AESTHETICS: A STUDY ON GEORG BASELITZ’S “HERO” SERIES

Yıl 2025, Cilt: 3 Sayı: 2, 1 - 17, 28.12.2025

Öz

Georg Baselitz is a leading representative of German figurative art. The artist's series, "Heroes" (Helden), produced between 1965 and 1970, visually explores the trauma experienced at individual and societal levels following World War II. Baselitz inverts the concept of "heroism," depicting the fragile, wounded, and disoriented individuals of the postwar generation. Through these figures, he reveals traces of both personal and collective memory. This article examines Georg Baselitz's "Heroes" series through the lens of trauma and post-memory. The first section explores the concepts of trauma and post-memory, examining their relationship to the paintings in the "Heroes" series, Baselitz's life, and his artistic and intellectual approach. The second section analyzes the content and form of the works in the series, assessing their connections to the artist's life story and artistic approach, and exploring the works' reflections on trauma and post-memory. As a result of the studies and analyses, it has been seen that Baselitz's Heroes series is an artistic expression of the deep traumas created by war and the repressed historical memory, that the artist offers a unique perspective by interpreting themes such as destruction, guilt, identity crisis in an expressionist style through heroic figures, and that these works are closely related to concepts such as post-memory, trauma, individual and collective memory.
