The Language of Silence: Unspoken Words in Sebastian Barry's Days Without End

Öz

In the landscape of contemporary English literature, particularly within the rich tradition of Irish storytelling, silence often speaks with a profound and unsettling resonance. It can signify historical trauma, repressed identity, or the ineffable space between individuals. Sebastian Barry’s Days Without End stands as a masterful exploration of this theme, intricately weaving personal and historical narratives through the potent medium of what is left unsaid. Through the eyes of Thomas McNulty, an Irish immigrant and American Civil War soldier, Barry explores the unspeakable experiences of a marginalized individual navigating a world defined by violence and repression as an immigrant, a soldier, a survivor, and a man of fluid gender and sexual identity. The novel’s lyrical, stream-of-consciousness prose is punctuated by silences, both personal and collective, that challenge the reader to engage with the unspoken dimensions of its story, placing Barry in a lineage of writers who question the very capacity of language to capture the full spectrum of human experience.
