The Power of Humor in Fighting Stress in Diabetes Patients

Öz

Diabetes is a disease characterized by chronically elevated blood sugar levels due to a disruption in the body’s production or utilization of insulin. Over time, it can lead to serious health complications such as heart disease, kidney failure, nerve damage, and vision loss. Diabetes patients may experience psychological and physiological stress due to blood sugar control, continuous medication or insulin use, dietary restrictions, and lifestyle changes imposed by the disease. Stress can cause imbalances in blood sugar levels by increasing the release of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can further complicate the management of the disease. Humor, on the other hand, is a cognitive, emotional, and social skill that enables individuals to approach situations with a humorous perspective, reduce stress, and support emotional well-being. Research has shown that humor can reduce stress hormones, strengthen the immune system, and increase psychological resilience. For diabetes patients, humor can be an effective tool in alleviating anxiety related to the disease, improving well-being, and coping with adverse situations. Additionally, humor can strengthen social bonds, enabling diabetes patients to receive more support from their environment, reducing feelings of loneliness and enhancing motivation. The use of humor in daily life can facilitate treatment adherence for individuals with diabetes, create a positive mood, improve overall quality of life, and help them maintain a stronger psychological stance in the face of the disease.
