Evaluation of the Architectural Features of Historical Erzurum Mosques

Öz

The aim of this study is to evaluate 44 historical mosques located in the city center of Erzurum from an architectural perspective and to classify these structures according to their construction periods, building techniques, and external and internal architectural elements. The study was conducted within the framework of both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A literature review was carried out, the mosques were examined through on-site observations, and their architectural features were documented. The qualitative data obtained from field studies were converted into numerical data and analyzed using Network Plot analysis. The evaluations made through network analysis support that the mosques are categorized into two groups based on architectural similarities: monumental and classical Ottoman mosque architecture and Local and neighborhood types mosques architecture. This classification demonstrates that the mosque architecture in Erzurum encompasses both the centralized Ottoman style and the unique local architectural understanding specific to rural areas. This diversity serves as an important resource for both architectural history studies and the preservation of cultural heritage. The study provides a meaningful typological analysis of Ottoman-Turkish architectural culture through the mosque architecture of Erzurum and contributes to the understanding of regional architectural trends.
