Social Capital and Social Connectedness in University Students: Hakkari University Example

Öz

Social capital and social connectedness are two fundamental phenomena that have a decisive role in the social, economic and cultural empowerment of individuals and communities. University students, as a dynamic element of social change and development, constitute a remarkable sample group in terms of researching these phenomena. In this context, The aim of this research, which was conducted on Hakkari University students, is to evaluate the social capital and social connectedness levels of students within the framework of the parameters of these two phenomena. The research aims to reveal how the strength of students' social networks, mutual trust and co-operation levels and their connectedness to the society and to their own selves are shaped. In addition, it is aimed to examine the relationships and interactions between social capital and social connectedness in depth. In this convergent parallel mixed method study, quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques were used simultaneously and the data obtained were analysed in harmony with each other. Within the scope of the research, social connectedness and social capital scales were applied to measure students' social capital and social connectedness levels. In addition, through semi-structured interviews, students' experiences of social capital and social connectedness were analysed in the light of individual stories and personal views. The results of the study provide important findings on the social capital and social connectedness levels of Hakkari University students and interpret the relationships between these two phenomena.
