MICROBIOLOGIC TESTS IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF LOWER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS

Yıl 2003, Cilt: 17 Sayı: 1, 33 - 44, 01.05.2003

Because the diagnosis of lower respiratory tract infections, primarily pneumonia has become urgent problem, laboratories have made significant strides in establishing some of these diagnoses more expeditiously than in the past. Lots of new tests has come into usage and some routin tests has developed. Microbiologic tests have great importance in diagnosis and following the response to therapy in lower respiratory diseases. Following inflamatuar reaction and showing microbiologic eradication would allow to evaluate results more objectively. Selection the appropriate sample and application time affects the yield of the tests although the microbiologic tests are generally useful for definite diagnosis. Recognizing which tests should be performed in which patients and situations will improve the effectiveness of the tests. Special information and experience is required for evaluation of some tests.
