A Comparative Investigation of Middle and High School Students' Metaphors Towards Artificial Intelligence

Abstract

The aim of the study is to comparatively examine middle and high school students' perceptions of the concept of “artificial intelligence” through metaphors. The study was conducted with 112 middle school and 59 high school students studying at a private school in western Turkey in the spring semester of 2023-2024. Convenient sampling method was used to select the students. The study was conducted using the phenomenology method, one of the qualitative research methods. The students were asked to complete the sentence “Artificial intelligence is similar to .......... Because ...............” sentence and the data obtained were subjected to content analysis. As a result of the study, it was seen that middle school and high school students produced 41 and 43 metaphors, respectively, and these metaphors were grouped under 15 and 13 different categories, respectively. The highest frequencies of the metaphors produced by middle school students were robot and human, while high school students produced human and brain. The results reveal that high school students perceive artificial intelligence in a more human dimension compared to middle school students. In addition, it was observed that middle school students perceived artificial intelligence more optimistically than high school students, while high school students considered the possible risks of artificial intelligence more.
