ADVERSE EFFECTS OF SOFT STORY IRREGULARITY ON REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURES
Abstract
It is known that the structural irregularities in the earthquake regulations in force in our country have a very high impact on the heavy damage of the structures in the earthquake and the high number of loss of life and property losses. As a result of the studies and analyzes carried out in the field after the earthquake, it has been determined that irregular structures have less earthquake resistance and suffer greater damage. Architectural designers and other professional groups involved in the application phase in the construction sector should have knowledge about structural irregularities and understand their importance in earthquake resistant building design. It should be ensured that they follow the design and implementation stages of the buildings in detail in this context. The definition and calculation formulas of structural irregularities are included in the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY 2018). Designers should avoid irregular building design by investigating these calculations and design factors that cause irregularity. The definition and calculation formulas of structural irregularities are included in the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBDY 2018). In this study, soft story irregularity, which is one of the types of vertical structural irregularities, is analyzed. The definition of soft story irregularity in the regulation and calculation method are explained. The design factors that cause soft story irregularity and the effects of these misapplications on the earthquake resistance of the structures have been researched and added to the sources that contain important information on this subject. The factors causing soft storey irregularity and preferable design recommendations for taking precautions are expressed in detail by tabulating with visuals. In this study, soft storey irregularity, which is one of the structural irregularities frequently encountered in earthquakes, was investigated. This irregularity, which is a type of vertical irregularity, is also known as inter-story stiffness irregularity. The definition and calculation of soft story irregularity, design factors that cause this irregularity, and applicable design approaches to prevent irregularity are analyzed and explained. Necessary precautions should be taken in this regard for earthquake resistant building design.
