DO RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ECONOMIC GLOBALIZATION IMPROVE ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY? EVIDENCE FROM TURKEY FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Yıl 2023, Cilt: 3 Sayı: 2, 74 - 86

Öz

The study investigates the impact of renewable energy and economic globalization on per capita carbon emissions as an indicator of environmental quality in Turkey from 1980-2020. The study includes unit root, cointegration, and causality analyses based on Fourier functions that allow better modeling of structural breaks. The results show that renewable energy and economic globalization improve environmental quality. Economic globalization contributes more to environmental quality in the long run than renewable energy production. Sustainable development involves ensuring economic growth in the long run as well as limiting its deteriorating impact on environmental conditions. According to the causality analysis, there is no short-run causality relationship between GDP per capita, agricultural production, renewable energy, and globalization to carbon emissions. For sustainable development in Turkey, policymakers can use renewable energy and economic globalization as an anchor in the long-run dynamics instead of short-run dynamics.
