EXAMINATION OF THE MODERNIST CITY-NATURE RELATIONSHIP AS A STRATEGY FOR DETERMINING SOCIAL BEHAVIORS: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
Öz
Cities faced with a spatial stratification due to economic reasons and environmental problems that threaten public health, especially in the beginning of the 20th century, with the effect of industrialization. In this process, rural areas which are far from industrial areas have become settlements that can benefit from the opportunities of nature but insufficient in terms of infrastructure and service compared to the city. Many pioneers in various disciplines have developed projects, proposals and utopias about solutions to these problems. In order to solve the problems in the cities, Ebenezer Howard put forward the idea of 'garden city' as a city-rural synthesis where the advantages of rural and urban life can be lived together. Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier have also developed their projects in which the relationship between the city and nature is at the forefront. Although the designs and proposals of Howard, Wright and Le Corbusier intersect in terms of the city-nature relationship, they have radical differences in terms of physical, sociological, cultural and political. This situation may be due to the ideological thoughts of the modernist pioneers or the way they interpret the city. In all three projects, there are many details in order to meet the physical, social, economic and cultural needs of the city. Considering the lifestyles that are desired to be created in cities, it can be said that each of them uses the city-nature relationship to implement their own ideas and ideologies. As it can be understood from the examined projects of Howard, Wright and Le Corbusier, urban planning can be used as a means of controlling the behavioral reflexes of the society, as well as being a physical landscaping element. In this sense, for Modernism, the city can become an expression of its power to shape social relations and create organizational behavior.
