This paper examines the environmental implications of wedding ceremonies in Kano Metropolitan, focusing on the generation and management of solid waste. Waste generation and management have become pressing issues in rapidly growing urban centers across Nigeria, particularly in Kano State, which stands as one of the most populous cities in the country. The city is known for its vibrant social and cultural life, including weddings and other large gatherings that generate enormous amounts of solid waste. The results show that wedding ceremonies are a major contributor to solid waste in Kano metropolis, dominated by plastics (48%) and food leftovers (32%). Poor waste disposal practices, such as leaving waste uncollected for days, exacerbate environmental challenges like flooding, pollution, and blocked drainage systems. In conclusion, although weddings are culturally significant, they threaten environmental sustainability if not managed properly. However, there is encouraging evidence that with policies, awareness, and cultural engagement, more sustainable waste management practices can be adopted during wedding ceremonies.
