INVESTIGATION OF GENDER PERCEPTIONS IN A DISTRICT OF ISTANBUL
Öz
Gender is a concept used to distinguish socially and culturally determined gender identity from biological sex. Discrimination based on an individual’s gender may occur in the contexts of social opportunities, allocation and utilization of resources, and access to services. This discrimination more negatively impacts women, who are relatively disadvantaged and have lower social status compared to men. In order to determine gender perception (gp), gender inequality and discrimination, it is important to understand societal attitudes toward gender roles and the reasons underlying different attitudes. However, few studies have been conducted on this subject in Turkey with a sample that represents the population, especially in the healthcare field. The aim of this cross-sectional descriptive study was to investigate associations between gp and sociodemographic variables using the “Gender Perception Scale” (Altınova & Duyan, 2013). A total of 240 subjects were included in the study, including 168 women and 72 men attending 6 family health centers in the Fatih district of the Istanbul province. The subjects’ mean gender perception score was 91.67±15.02. The Cronbach's alpha value of the scale is 0.887. The results of the study revealed statistically significant associations between subjects’ gp scores and their gender, education, income level, marital status, number of children, employment status, insurance, regular income, and parents' education level. However, no statistically significant relationship was found between the gp scores of men and their marital status, employment status, regular income, number of children, or mother’s education level. These results suggest that further investigation of the factors affecting men’s gp is needed. In addition, considering the positive effects of employment and education on women’s gp, women should be encouraged to pursue education and career and should be supported regarding childcare.
