THE EFFECT OF TURKISH-GREEK EXCHANGE ON THE FORMATION OF URBAN SPACE IN ANATOLIA, EXAMPLE OF GIRESUN / BULANCAK
Öz
Migration has been
one of the most important factors shaping the social structure in Anatolia
almost in every period. Migration was realized due to various reasons such as
war, infectious diseases, economic or political reasons, irrespective of the
cause of both the immigrant and immigrated to the local people in the first
place, especially in terms of sociological and economic affects. In this
context, the mutual immigration between Greece and Turkey with the agreement
signed in Lausanne after the War of Independence has taken its place in history
as one of the most comprehensive migration movements in the Republican period.
According to this agreement, a compulsory population exchange between the Greek
people living in the borders of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish people
living within the borders of Greece was carried out and hundreds of thousands
of people started to live in the territories where they were foreigners under
the name of “exchanged”.
They have tried to adapt to their new homeland and
have tried to keep the culture they have; and in this process they have been in
constant interaction with the indigenous people. This situation shaped, or in
other words, transformed the society. Reflections of this transformation, along
with economic, social, political and especially cultural aspects, have brought
new spatial solutions within the city. Different functions have started to take
place in the city, new orientations and priorities have affected urban
development more or less. These changes / transformations and orientations that
took place in the urban space after the exchange were one of the factors that
played a role in shaping the urban space in Anatolia during the Republican
period. For this reason, the study of the changes / transformations and trends
in the city has created the subject of study.
Study area is selected as Giresun province, Bulancak
district. Because Giresun and the town
of Bulancak are the settlements where the Greek Cypriot population lived in the
past in the Black Sea and after the exchange the “exchanged” people have
settled. The study aims to evaluate the changes / transformations occurring in
the city center urban space after the interchange in the context of the determined
sample in the context of the components constituting the urban space.
