Öz

Bu çalışma, Paula Rego’nun, 1986-87 yllarına ait ‘Kız ve Köpek’ ve 1994 yılına ait 'Köpek Kadınlar' isimli resim
serilerinde, eşi Victor Willing’in MS hastalığı ve kaybı ile bağlantılı duygularını metaforik ve metamorfik bir dille
ifade ettiği resimlerini incelemektedir. Resimlerinde hikaye anlatmasıyla dikkat çeken, günümüz figüratif resim
sanatının en önemli temsilcileri arasında sayılan Paula Rego’nun eserlerinin anlaşılabilmesi için kilit öneme sahip
unsurlar arasında metafor ve metamorfoz yer alır. Çalışma,sanatçının resimlerinde metafora ve metamorfoza nasıl,
hangi nedenlerle yer verdiğini açıklamayı amaçlamaktadır. Adı geçen seriler içerisinde köpek imgesinin ve
metamorfoza uğrayarak köpeğe özgü özellikler sergileyen kadın figürlerinin bulunduğu tipik resimler üzerinde
durulmuştur. Bununla birlikte ressamın metaforik anlatımını ve metamorfik öğelerini içeren belli başlı serilerine de
değinilmektedir. Çalışma, Rego’nun kişisel ve çocukça ya da eleştirel ve bir yetişkin gözüyle aktardığı resimlerinin
anlam sınırının psikolojik, toplumsal ve tarihi konulara kadar genişletilebileceğini; bu sınırlar içinde metaforun
anlatımı yönlendirici ve metamorfozun, sanatçı için eleştirel ve tamamlayıcı görsel bir dil; metamorfik figürler için
bir tür baş etme biçimi olarak kullanılmış olduğunu göstermektedir. İncelemede Rego hakkında yazılan kitap ve
makalelerin yanı sıra ressamın röportajlarından çıkarılan verilere yer verilmektedir.

Woman And Dog In Paula Rego's Paintings: Metaphor And Metamorphosis

Öz

This study examines Paula Rego's paintings in the series "Girl and Dog" dated 1986-87 and "Dog Women" dated
1994, in which the artist expresses her feelings related to her husband Victor Willing’s MS disease and his loss in
metaphorical and metamorphic terms. Metaphor and metamorphosis are among the key elements in
understanding the works of Paula Rego, who draws attention with her storytelling in her paintings and is considered
one of the most important representatives of figurative painting art today. This work aims to explain how and why
she includes metaphor and metamorphosis in her paintings. Within the mentioned series typical paintings in which
the image of the dog and the metamorphosis of female figures that exhibit dog-specific characteristics are
emphasized. However, her main series including her metaphorical expression and metamorphic elements are also
mentioned. The study shows that the limits of the meaning of Rego's paintings, which are personal and childish orconveyed through a critical and mutual perspective, can be extended to psychological, social, and historical issues,
and that within these limits, the narration of the metaphor was directive and metamorphosis was used as an escape
route for metamorphic figures, a critical and complementary language for the artist. The review includes personal
data extracted from the painter's interviews, as well as books and articles written about Rego.
