The primary aim of this study is to compare the psychosocial adjustment levels of adolescents who regularly engage in sports with those who maintain a sedentary lifestyle, focusing on competence and problem behavior domains. A further objective is to examine group differences by gender and developmental stage, and to determine the effects of sport participation intensity on adjustment indicators among athletic adolescents. The study sample consisted of 275 adolescents residing in Çankırı, including 165 athletes and 110 sedentary adolescents aged 12–17. Data were collected using the “Socio-Demographic Information Form” and the “Youth Self-Report”, and analyzed through independent samples t-tests and one-way ANOVA. According to the findings, athletic adolescents had higher social competence scores but lower school competence scores than their sedentary peers. In the domain of problem behaviors, athletes obtained lower scores across all subscales, including internalizing and externalizing problems as well as social, thought, and attention problems. Regarding gender, girls showed higher internalizing problem scores in both groups, whereas sedentary boys scored higher than girls on externalizing problems. Developmental comparisons indicated that athletic adolescents in middle adolescence had lower problem behavior scores than those in early adolescence, while sedentary adolescents showed decreased competence levels and increased externalizing problems during the same period. Additionally, higher sport participation intensity among athletes was associated with increased somatic complaints and attention problems. Overall, the findings indicate that regular sport participation contributes to adolescents’ psychosocial adjustment, although certain risk areas may emerge depending on the intensity, nature, and individual characteristics of sport involvement.
